Abstract
My dissertation examines why languages were (not) introduced into the curricula of Swiss compulsory education, using process tracing of selected reforms from 1830 to 1980 to test competing theoretical explanations of curriculum design. It shows that economic considerations have often overridden political and pedagogical ones in deciding whether to teach languages to young children, and in choosing which languages to teach.
